Toy Story 5 Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Tablet Computer
It has been 30 anniversary since the original Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a leading film company and introducing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.
In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a brief look into the storyline but leaving fans wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys
In the teaser shows Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the teaser doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is back with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (the actress), journeying with a carnival and helping giveaway items find good homes.
Surely, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Connections from the Previous Film
At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her shirt.
Hopefully she is still the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
