Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Context of Sentencing

He was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.
