"Any idea when you're chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: The author likewise longs to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. A host of famous supporters have also coveted the position.

It's clear a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos often show them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the biggest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate others to make music."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the next part of the family."

Award Recognition

The trio are speaking from home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics detail breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound resilience demanded a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international following.

Yet the band will consistently be their top priority.

"We have been making music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
