A minimum of thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
